Northeast retailer cooperative Allegiance Retail Services LLC has purchased the intellectual property of former A&P division Pathmark, including the Pathmark logo, trademarks, brand name, pathmark.com domain, and all other intellectual property associated with the Pathmark name.
Additionally, Iselin, N.Y.-based Allegiance bought the intellectual property of Green Way, a natural/organic A&P private label line of products made without pesticides, chemicals or artificial fertilizers, and sold in eco-friendly packaging.
“The addition of the Pathmark name provides increased flexibility from a format standpoint to both our existing membership and to prospective members,” said John T. Derderian, Allegiance president and COO. “This metro-New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania banner still has strong equity among consumers, and Allegiance plans on further strengthening the Pathmark name with new merchandising and operational enhancements.”
Allegiance Chairman and CEO David Maniaci added that the Green Way acquisition would “add to our already strong private label offering, and represents a point of entry, from a value standpoint, to many consumers who feel ‘priced out’ of natural/organic products today. The Pathmark and Green Way acquisitions further contribute to making Allegiance a superior multibrand retailer cooperative.”
The company isn’t the only Northeast retailer cooperative to snap up bankrupt A&P’s former intellectual property: Key Food Co-operative Inc. has secured rights to The Food Emporium and, just this week, SuperFresh.
Allegiance supports independent supermarkets such as Foodtown, Freshtown, Freshco, D’Agostino, LaBella Marketplace, Brooklyn Harvest, Market Fresh, Big Deal Food Market and Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace by providing them with marketing, advertising, technological and merchandising services, as well as a full line of Foodtown private label products.
